Shivan & Narresh at Lotus Make-Up India Fashion Week spring/summer 2019

The art of the Gond tribe was the inspiration behind Shivan& Narresh’s Koi Series Collection at LMIFW SS'19. The luxury holiday brand’s collection featured six new prints—Koi, Koi Coal, Mattie, Vann, Urvi and Iconotribe—that celebrate Gond art characterized by decorative motifs and patterns arranged through dots, dashes, lines and circles.

The Koi Series captures the finer nuances of Dravidian Gond art and coalesces it with chromatic inspiration from the bustling spice markets of Ottoman-era Turkey, each discovered by the designers on their recent travels.

The effortless amalgamation of these contrasting designs aesthetics, initiates the foundation for the new collection inspired by the universes of travel and art. The Gond art of Madhya Pradesh, an art form originated in the 19th century, features paintings by the Gond or the eponymous Koi tribes of the geography, known for its meticulous detailing, color abundance and mystical artistic psyche, the art form is reflective of the relationship of man with nature, while turning to Hindu legends and mythologies for inspiration. Characterized through decorative motifs, the patterns arranged through dots, dashes, lines and circles are known to add ‘a sense of movement to the still image’. Jangarh Singh Shyam, the first Gond artist to use paper and canvas for his art, along with his wife Nankusia bai and two children, has exhibited his paintings across the globe, including Paris and japan.
